Thesis : A numerical framework for electric vehicles (EVs)

This thesis is suitable for an engineering student in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, machine dynamics or equivalent with an interest in construction equipment, CAD modeling and virtual simulation.
Background:
Volvo Construction Equipment, a business area within the Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, dumpers, excavators, road construction machines and compact machines. Production is available in Europe, Asia, North America and South America.
In order to maintain a market-leading position, it is important to develop products with high quality and at the same time meet the requirements of future machine generations for robust, energy-efficient and noise/vibration less drivelines. Especially there are currently quite a number of shortcomings in the design and development of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) or fully electric vehicle (EVs). Also to add value further and allow more realistic and improved concept studies, we should have better virtual models in the early design- and development phases. Simulation models of electrical components lack accuracy and interactions between mechanical and electrical components are not well known or explored. This design and development mainly takes place at the Division of Driveline Systems at the Technical Center in Eskilstuna.
Project summary:
The aim of the thesis is to create a numerical framework for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) or fully electric vehicle (EVs) development: from modelling to engineering through real-world data analysis by use of GT-suite (It is a SW product of Gamma Technologies). Also to study the noise, vibration and harhness (NVH) behaviors of HEV or fully EV powertrains to be used in VCE’s wheel loaders.
The main activities are:
  • Study the current physical and as wells as GT-suite model of internal combustion engine (ICE) based powertrains, collect and pre-process related knowledge
  • Develop HEV or fully EV powertrains based on supervised and unsupervised methods to predict the (NVH) behaviors
  • Analyze and compare different methods’ prediction results
  • Validate the predict results with test results or other resources
  • The work also includes evaluating a potential of newly launched software module which is available within GT-suite for HEV or fully EV applications
A full report of the work carried out will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be required for the student to perform the thesis at Volvo CE in Eskilstuna.
