The Volvo Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine and industrial engines.
Group Trucks Operations - GTO - is the truck industrial entity within the Volvo Group responsible for Truck manufacturing, including Cab & Vehicle Assembly, Powertrain Production, Logistics Services, Parts Distribution and Remanufacturing.
At the plant in Köping we make transmissions for most of the Volvo group products and different business areas. In a competitive industry, the Köping plant is continuously improving to be the world leading transmission factory.
The transport sector is an industry facing substantial change in multiple areas. Within the near future the traditional production will become more automated, flexible, reconfigurable, smart and connected in order to produce the electric connected autonomous heavy vehicles of tomorrow. In order to face these challenges we have developed GTO 2.0.
GTO 2.0 is the framework that drives the industrial transformation towards the future. It defines our wanted position on both technological and human aspects to keep us competitive, meeting society's and the customer's demands. People, competencies and leadership are an essential aspect of this Program

Automation is in many cases a key factor for a more efficient production. However, robots are not able to efficiently perform all task possible for humans. On the road to a more automated assembly, humans and robots need to work closely side by side on the assembly line whilst not risking the safety of the operators working in the manual assembly stations. From a footprint perspective
In an assembly line, closed robot cells with fences are not viable therefore, the development and usage of new safety technologies is essential to assure the safety of humans.
The aim of the thesis is to find and present the best solution of how to manage robots working alongside humans at our assembly lines from a safety, footprint, and reconfigurability perspective.
